Macoupin County Economic Development is an agency funded by county government that falls under the authority of the Macoupin County Board. It’s activities are governed by an economic development committee made up of seven Macoupin County Board members.
The mission of Macoupin County Economic Development is to increase and diversify economic activities within Macoupin County through the retention and expansion of existing businesses and the attraction of new development. Through job creation and retention, the Macoupin County Board hopes to improve the quality of life of the county’s residents.
The aggressive expansion of the Macoupin County Enterprise Zone in recent years will continue to serve as the cornerstone for continued development throughout Macoupin County.
Responsibilities of the economic development office include:
– Administer the county’s Revolving Fund Program and the Macoupin County Enterprise Zone in order to encourage county businesses to expand and to attract new businesses to communities within
Macoupin County.
– Create and maintain a database of available county sites and buildings for use in marketing the county to
businesses looking to expand and build in Macoupin County.
– Serve as a liaison between business owners and other agencies such as the State of Illinois, public utilities, transportation and other economic development partners.
– Work with and coordinate activities of the county’s units of local government (cities and villages) to market each town’s unique attributes to potential businesses.
Macoupin County Economic Development also recognizes tourism’s contribution to economic development and strives to support its further development. Ongoing tourism efforts include developing marketing activities along Route 66 as well as the promotion of the Carlinville Christmas Market and the Mother Jones Festival.
Macoupin County is conveniently located in southwestern Illinois between Springfield, IL and St. Louis, MO. No part of the county is more than a 30-minute drive from a major metropolitan area, and yet Macoupin County has kept its small town charm.
