The Sheriff is the chief law enforcement officer of the County, the acting officer of the Circuit Court, public safety director and the administrator of the County Jail. The duties of the Sheriff's Office include:
-Investigate all crimes of violence and fraud, arrest suspects and recover
-Provide police service to the unincorporated areas of Macoupin County
-Maintain a record of all traffic accidents, arrests, investigations and complaints
warrants issued at the request of the State's Attorney and all writs and
summonses issued by the Circuit Court
all prisoners confined to the County Jail and deliver prisoners to
court for arraignments, bench or jury trails.
Don Albrecht has served as Macoupin County Sheriff since being sworn in on July 1, 2005 to fill an un-expired term. He was then elected to the position in November of 2006.
Sheriff Albrecht has a long history in law enforcement, starting as a midnight patrol officer for Staunton Police Department more than 20 years ago.
Sheriff Albrecht graduated as president of his class from Belleville Area College (now S.W.I.C.) police academy in 1986.
In 1993 he was promoted to Chief Investigator with the Staunton Police Department. Albrecht became a certified Crime Scene Investigator the same year after graduating from crime scene school at the University of Illinois Champaign.
During his tenure as a Staunton Police Officer, Sheriff Albrecht also served as a part-time Macoupin County Sheriff’s Deputy.
In 2000 Sheriff Albrecht left the Staunton Police Department to accept a position as an Illinois Secretary of State Police Investigator. He graduated from the Illinois S.O.S. Police Academy at Blackburn College that same year. Investigator Albrecht was assigned to the Metro East Area handling numerous cases in St.Clair, Madison, Jersey and Calhoun Counties.
Sheriff Albrecht has a varied history of community involvement and service having been twice elected to the Staunton School Board, serving two years as vice president and two years as president. He was also a union steward for Teamsters Local 525 which represents Staunton Police Officers. He is currently a member of F.O.P. Lodge #95, American Legion Post 554, Elks #1412, C.F.U. Lodge #217, Black Diamond Chapter of A.B.A.T.E. and Macoupin County Farm Bureau.
Professionally, Sheriff Albrecht serves on the West Central Illinois Criminal Justice Council Board of Directors, is the Macoupin County Law Enforcement Advisor to Macoupin and Montgomery Counties Crime Stoppers, is on the board of directors for South Central Illinois Drug Task Force, is a member of Macoupin County Anti-Meth Coalition, and is a member of the Illinois Sheriff’s Association serving on several committees.
Sheriff Albrecht resides in rural Staunton with his wife Shari. They have one adult daughter.
